Contraception
Combined oral contraception – the pill
The combined contraceptive pill is a tablet that contains two female hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. It is: up to 99% effective when you use the method correctly every time; up to 91% when you don’t always use the method correctly.
How does it work? Hormones stop a woman ovulating (releasing an egg each month). There are many different brands of pill with different combinations of hormones. Your GP will advise you on the correct hormone combination that suits you. It is important that you talk to a doctor who will assess what contraceptive option is best for you.
Contraceptive implant (IMPLANON)
The contraceptive implant is a small flexible plastic rod which is placed under your skin. It slowly releases the progesterone hormone and gives contraceptive protection for 3 years. The implant is usually inserted in the inner part of the upper arm and while it can be felt under the skin it cannot be seen.
How does it work? Fitted under the skin of the inside of upper arm. Releases progestogen into circulation. Stops ovulation and thickens cervical mucus. No pills or injections to remember.
Contraceptive coil (MIRENA)
A Mirena coil, also called a hormonal coil, is an intrauterine birth control system (IUS) that is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Mirena coils are recommended for women who have already had one child although they can be inserted in those that have never had a child. They are small, T-shaped plastic IUS devices that a healthcare provider places directly into the endometrial cavity of the uterus. Mirena coils provide long-term birth control that is minimally invasive and very effective. They can also be used to treat a variety of conditions, including heavy periods, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, adenomyosis and anaemia. Mirena coils provide a number of advantages over other forms of birth control. They can be used while breast-feeding and users have the reassurance of effective birth control.
How does it work? Fitted on a five yearly basis after completion of swabs to rule out infection. The IUS releases tiny dose of progestogen into uterus. Thickens cervical mucus which works on the lining of the uterus and prevents pregnancy.
