Dental prosthodontics

Tooth decays, gum diseases, incorrect position of the teeth or bad bite can lead to the loss of tooth or its part. When a filling cannot solve the problem, dental prosthetics are used.  After dental prosthetics, normal chewing function and speech are restored, the teeth look good and natural, the jaw joint and the bone are protected. Moreover, people want to smile again!

Why is teeth restoration so important?

Because of teeth loss, the chewing function weakens. It can lead to changes in eating habits, resulting in the lack of important nutrients and stomach diseases. In addition, there is more pressure on the remaining teeth and, ultimately, they lose their normal appearance and function. The jaw joint changes as a result as well: it wears out faster and starts to hurt with time, the movements can become limited.  No doubt, healthy and beautiful teeth are very important for well-being and self-confidence.

How are dental prosthetics made?

  • Consultation. The consultation with the specialist lasts around 10-30 minutes. The doctor examines the patient’s teeth, assesses the situation and offers several individual treatment options, listing their advantages and disadvantages. The patient considers the treatment options and participates in decision-making. During the consultation, a panoramic (all teeth) X-ray is usually taken, which allows to assess the condition of the patient’s oral cavity more accurately.
  • If necessary, dental fillings or other dental care are performed prior to prosthetics.
  • Modern technologies allow us to offer various solutions for the teeth restoration:
  •        Metal-ceramic, zirconia ceramic, all ceramic crowns
  •        Porcelain laminates – veneers
  •        Bridge structures
  •        Prosthetics on implants
  •        Removable partial dentures
  •        Full and partial dentures
  • When performing prosthetics with crowns, veneers or bridge structures, the tooth is ground to the required shape. A dental cast is made from a special substance. It is later used as a model for a temporary crown made in the laboratory, and then forfurther  casting of dental prosthetic. The permanent prosthesis is fitted in the cavity of the patient and cemented.

Metal ceramic crowns

The base is made of metal and covered with ceramics. The colour is chosen taking into account the colour of the patient’s other teeth. Dentures of this type are reliable, similar to natural teeth and are cheaper than other types of crowns. However, due to the metal frame, they do not reflect the light the same way as natural teeth. They are not as aesthetic as metal-free or zircon-ceramics. Moreover, the tooth may get darker at the gum line with the time. Therefore, this type of crowns is more suitable for prosthetics of molars.

Zirconia ceramic crowns

The base is made from white material, zirconium oxide, and is coated with ceramics. This type of crowns is stronger than other all-ceramic (metal-free) prostheses. It looks more aesthetic than metal-ceramic crowns since zirconium reflects light almost as much as natural teeth. Therefore, zircon ceramic crowns are suitable for prosthetics of both anterior and posterior teeth.

All ceramic crowns

They are made exclusively of porcelain, which makes these prostheses look very natural. They are usually used to replace missing front teeth, but also suitable for all teeth.

Porcelain laminates – veneers

They are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth. This method of prosthetics is used to improve the aesthetics of a smile.

Dental bridges

Bridges are recommended when one or several teeth are missing. They are attached to the adjacent teeth that are crowned. Bridges can also be attached to implants.

Removable Prosthodontics

Removable prosthodontics is concerned with replacing the teeth and soft tissues with a non-permanent prosthesis that can be removed. These are often known as dentures, and can replace a full arch of teeth (complete dentures), or a number of individual or grouped tooth spaces (partial dentures).
